Match Media
On This Day
Villa return to League action and concede five at home to Portsmouth to leave them four points from safety at the bottom of the table but with a game in hand on third from bottom Preston.
Villaโs latest defeat - their thirteenth in twenty six games - proves to be Tommy Dochertyโs final game in charge.
Docherty had spent ยฃ350,000, had made increasingly outlandish claims as to his and Villaโs imminent success, had continued his self publicising ways, had ostracised essential squad quality but many fans continued to idolise someone who had delivered just four wins and who was clearly unable to rectify his shortcomings from the very first games of the season.
Only inactivity of the equally culpable Herbert Douglas Ellis and the honeymoon period for the โnewโ board allowed the unfolding disaster to continue past the obvious point of action.
Yet still the media called it a โshockโ as did the unrepentant Docherty himself.
Tommy Docherty's terrible season continues as Villa lose for a fourth time in the last five League games to make it four wins, nine draws and thirteen defeats in twenty six division two matches. Villaโs latest reverse saw them rooted to the bottom of the Division Two table having conceded 36 and scoring only 19 goals.
Meanwhile, defender Dick Edwards made his final appearance for Villa aged 27 before moving on to Torquay United in June 1970. Edwards played for Villa between 1967-68 and 1969-70 making 77 appearances, scoring twice.
Full back Barry Lynch made his third and final appearance for Villa aged 18 before moving on to Atlanta Chiefs in the summer of 1971. --- Monday, 19 January 1970
Manager Tommy Docherty and first team trainer-coach Arthur Cox were sacked by Villa after presiding over an appalling season of football leaving the club facing almost certain relegation to the third tier. ---
Friday, 23 January 1970 Following similar behaviour earlier in his Villa career, full back Mick Wright declares he will no longer play for the club in the wake of the Docherty sacking.
โEllis must goโ chants reverberate around a Villa Park reserve match as supporters point the finger of blame at upstart Chairman Herbert Douglas Ellis. ---
Monday, 26 January 1970 Former Villa wing half Vic Crowe is appointed manager of Villa having acted as caretaker in the week since Tommy Dochertyโs sacking after stepping up from his position as second team coach.
What they Said
โDocherty outโ
โBarrie Hole.โ
โGerry Hitchens.โ
โWalsall, Walsall here we come.โ
โFootball is all about scoring goals and not giving them away.โ
Tommy Docherty, sacked shortly after.
"After a long and careful consideration, the board have reluctantly come to the conclusion that it would be in the best interests of Aston Villa for there to be a change in management.
"Consequently, Mr. Docherty and Mr. Cox were informed of this decision at today's board meeting. Mr. Docherty's contract has been honoured in every respect and suitable compensation has been agreed with Mr. Cox.
โNo decision has yet been made as to whether the club will seek a new manager. Priority
"It is the board's belief that the immediate priority is to maintain the club's stability while the present transition takes place."
Aston Villa board statement.
"My first reaction is one of big disappointment.
โQuite honestly, I thought I was getting the sack a month ago when the board then gave me a vote of confidence.
"But really I knew in my mind that it wasn't a vote of confidence.
" I have no hard feelings. You are only as good as your last result and I cannot argue with results this season.
"The only thing I am dissatisfied with is the time given me to get success. The club has been fair and generous but in twelve months you can only start something.
"I have bought the right players. They are lads for the future and, given the right breaks, they would have been players of the present.
โI would like everyone to make a note of players like Bruce Rioch, John Phillips and Jimmy Brown and look at them in three years time.
"It will not be a case of having the last laugh. I am only interested in Aston Villa going where they belong, in the First Division, and if these players help them to do it then I can look back in pride.
โIt has not all been bad luck. But if we had had some breaks we would have been further up the table. I am convinced Villa would have stayed up with me as manager.
โThis has been a bigger blow and greater disappointment than when I left Chelsea.
โIn fact, it is the greatest setback of my career. If I had known that I was only being given a year then I would not have accepted the job.
โI would like to stay in the game because it is my life. I don't know anything else."
Tommy Docherty.
