Villa take a point off fellow strugglers Preston in Vic Crowe’s first game in charge as Villa boss. In one game Crowe had equalled the tally earned in the previous five second division games under predecessor and still feted Tommy Docherty.
Docherty across his 26 games had delivered four wins (all at home) thirteen defeats and ten draws, seventeen points, conceding 41 whilst scoring 22.
Vic Crowe's first game in charge of Villa sees them earn a draw at Deepdale. Villa make it make it four wins, ten draws and thirteen defeats in twenty seven division two matches and remain bottom of the table with fifteen games to save themselves from a fall into the third tier for the first time in their history.
Meanwhile, rebel right back Mick Wright played for Villa just eight days after claiming he would never play for the club again. Despite the failed one man rebellion,
Vic Crowe's squad is depleted for the run in as midfielder Dave Rudge suffered a broken leg during the match and as a result he made his final appearance for Villa aged 22 before moving on to Hereford United in July 1973. Rudge played for Villa between 1966-67 and 1969-70 making 65 appearances and scoring 10 goals.

“The players were really taut and tense.
“Everyone was telling us that this was a match we could not afford to lose.
“The papers, the television and the radio screamed it at us,
“That’s why I took the lads away to Lilleshall during the week. But it was impossible to escape the tension altogether.
“Preston are also trying to avoid relegation and, in the circumstances, I was very pleased with our performance - especially the effort the players put into the game.
“We shall be looking for two points every time [in the remaining games].
‘It was a tragedy [Dave Rudge suffering a broken leg during the match. He was playing extremely well.
“He’s just the sort of player we need in our battle against relegation - a worker and a fighter.
“It’s a tremendous set back but we shallots have to try and overcome it.
“He’s a brave lad and he’ll be back.”
Vic Crowe.
“It was terrible to look at. You could see instantly that Dave had a very bad break.”
Lew Chatterley.

VIC CROWE last night moved into the Aston Villa hot seat, just a week after the shock sacking of former boss Tommy Docherty, Crowe, second team coach since last September, was named caretaker manager after Docherty's dismissal and yesterday was confirmed as team manager after a thre ehour board meeting at Villa Park. Crowe, 38, spent fourteen years as a player with Villa from 1950 to 1964. After a two-year spell at Peterborough he went to America as assistant manager in Atlanta to another former Villa player, Phil Woosnam, whose name has also been linked with Crowe's new job.
