Brian Godfrey

5724_edited.png

Player #523 for Aston Villa, Brian Cameron Godfrey known as Brian Godfrey played as a forward for the club.

Between 1967-68 and 1970-71 Brian made 159 appearances and scored 23 goals.

Brian was born in Flint on 1 May 1940 and he made his debut appearance for Villa on Saturday, 30 September 1967 aged 27.

Villa had signed Brian from Preston North End for £35,000 along with fellow Prestonian Brian Greenhalgh in September 1967.

Scoring on his debut and hitting 13 goals in 35 games promised much especially given the overall direction of the contemporary Villa side however Brian would score just 10 times in his next 124 games for the club dashing any hopes of a new terrace legend being created.

Despite his lack of goals Brian was highly valued by his managers and his final boss, Vic Crowe, handed him the captaincy for 1970-71 League Cup final against First Division Spurs.

That however was to prove Brian’s swansong and he would make his final appearance for Villa on Tuesday, 4 May 1971 aged 31 before moving on to Bristol Rovers in June 1971 with Ray Graydon coming the other way.

Brian passed away on 11 February 2010 aged 69 of leukaemia.
