Fred Turnbull
Player #527 for Aston Villa, Frederick Turnbull known as Fred Turnbull played as a centre back for the club between 1967-68 and 1973-74 making 184 appearances and scoring 3 goals.
Fred had originally arrived at Villa for a two-month trial from Centre ’64 FC, Blyth in August 1966 but impressed sufficiently to be signed professional forms with the club midway through.
Fred was born in Wallsend-on-Tyne on 28 August 1946.
Fred made his full debut for Villa a year later on Saturday, 30 September 1967 at the age of 21 and went on to be a strong, regular presence in Villa’s back line.
As Villa’s form worsened under Tommy Cummings and Tommy Docherty, Fred kept at it and the arrival of the saviour Vic Crowe saw his promotion to first team regular being a virtual ever present on two occasions, a trusted defensive leader in an improving side that culminated in promotion to the second tier and a League Cup final appearance against First Division Tottenham in 1971.
For Fred however the Ron Saunders years would appear a cruel joke as injury ended his career under Vic Crowe in 1974 still aged just 27.
Fred made his final appearance for Villa on Wednesday, 24 April 1974 before retiring in July 1974.
