Lionel was born in Ludlow on 15 May 1947 and made his debut appearance for Villa on Saturday, 13 May 1967 at the age of 20.

Villa had signed Lionel from Clee Hill Boys and he signed as a probationary pro in July 1962 before signing professional forms with Villa in July 1964.

Lionel became a more regular feature in the Villa first team in seasons 1968-69 and 1969-70 when Villa 18th in the Second Division followed by a 21st placed finish seeing Villa relegated to the Third Division for the first time in their history.

Better times were to come and after helping Villa to runners up in the League Cup in 1970-71 with 1 goal in 1 appearances.

Lionel’s final game for Villa came in the League Cup on Wednesday, 18 August 1971 - aged just 24 - and he moved on to Worcester City for a fee of £14,000.

During his time with Villa, Willie had played under managers Dick Taylor, Tommy Cummings, and Tommy Docherty and Vic Crowe.
