Lew Chatterley

Player #497 for Aston Villa, Lawson Colin Chatterley, known as Lew Chatterley played as a midfielder for the club.

Lew played for Villa between 1962-63 and 1970-71 making 164 appearances and scoring 27 goals.

Lew was born in Birmingham, just 3 miles from Villa Park on 15 February 1945 and made his debut appearance for Villa on Saturday, 4 May 1963 aged 18.

Villa had signed Lew from Birmingham Boys and he signed professional forms with Villa on 1 February 1962.

Lew made 10 league and cup appearances in his debut season including playing in the second leg of the 1963 League Cup Final against Birmingham City.

Lew remained at Villa Park for over 9 years but played in an era marked by a conspicuous absence of success.

Lew’s Villa spent 5 seasons in the bottom 8 of Division One before suffering relegation to the second division for the 1967-68 season yet he saw the club fall further - dropping into the Third Division in 1970-71.

That season, Villa registered their lowest ever league position - 4th in the third tier.

Lew played his final game for Villa in that season on Saturday, 21 November 1970 aged just 25 before moving on to Northampton Town on 1 September 1971 for a fee of £8,000.

Lew had played under Villa managers Joe Mercer, Dick Taylor, Tommy Cummings, Tommy Docherty and Vic Crowe.
