John was born in Barking on 21 June 1944 and he made his debut appearance for Villa on Saturday, 20 January 1968 aged 23.
Villa had signed John from Torquay United for £8,000 in January 1968 and in total he played for Villa for 4 seasons.
John became the first player signed from Torquay United since Wally Harris in 1925.
Prior to his time at Torquay John had been understudy to Chelsea’s Peter Bonnetti but found far more opportunity in a struggling Villa side and by his second season he was de facto first choice ‘keeper for Villa having started his Villa career behind Colin Withers.
John was the 63rd custodian of the Villa goal in League and Cup football and across his 118 games he conceded 128 goals at an excellent ratio of 1.08 whilst keeping 40 clean sheets - over a third of his games.
John made his final appearance for Villa on Saturday, 1 May 1971 aged 26 before moving on to Charlton Athletic in July 1971 aged 27.
John played under Villa managers Dick Taylor, Tommy Cummings, Tommy Docherty and Vic Crowe.
