Dave Simmons
Player #537 for Aston Villa, David John Simmons known as Dave Simmons played as a forward for the club between 1968-69 and 1970-71 making 18 appearances and scoring 7 goal.
Villa had signed Dave from Arsenal for £15,000 in February 1969 having not made an appearance for the Gunners and spending extended periods out on loan. Once in the Villa fold however Dave found his feet and hit 5 goals in just 10 games in the struggling Tommy Cummings side.
Dave was born in Ryde, Isle-of-Wight on 24 October 1948 and he made his debut appearance for Villa on Saturday, 15 February 1969 aged 20.
With Cummings’ departure and the arrival of Tommy Docherty, Dave barely got a look in and made just 8 appearances over the next two seasons delivering two goals as both Docherty and his successor Vic Crowe looked in other directions for Villa’s goals.
Dave made his final appearance for Villa on Saturday, 12 September 1970 aged 21 before moving on to Colchester United in December 1970 aged 22.
That would be as good as it got for Simmonds’ Villa career as a further 8 appearances over two seasons brought 2 goal. Simmonds moved on to Colchester United aged 22 in December 1970.
Dave passed away on 3 July 2007 aged 58
