Villa lose on the opening day of the season as Tommy Docherty makes his big promise: “First Division, 1971."
Villa fans think otherwise as Docherty disappoints once again and is met with slow handclaps.
Tommy Docherty's Villa open the season with a home defeat to Norwich as midfielder Bruce Rioch, 21, Chico Hamilton, 19, and Pat McMahon, 23, made their debuts after respectively joining from Luton Town for £100,000 in July 1969, £40,000 from Southend United in June 1969 and from Celtic in June 1969.
What they Said
“First Division, 1971.
“That’s my promise.
“I don’t offer just a hanging on existence in the first division.
“I foresee cups, championships, Europe.
“The good times all over again.”
Pre match, Tommy Docherty.
"They played the right sort of away game, including time-wasting for which I don't blame them.
“My boys know that today's performance wasn't good enough without any rockets from me.
“Rioch has a great future. He confirmed everything I thought of him when I made the signing."
Post match, Tommy Docherty.
