MATCHDAY QUOTES
"The Villa however had again the best of matters, H. Devey almost beating Toone with a high shot. The latter saved splendidly from Afhersrmith, who afterwards put the ball through but he was offside."
*The Birmingham Daily Post*

SATURDAY’S FOOTBALL.
THE LEAGUE - DIVISION I.
ASTON VILLA V. NOTTS.
The weather was of a wintry character on Trent Bridge Ground when Notts met Aston Villa, and there were only about 4,000 spectators present. Notts went off with a rush, and Bruce only just sent over from a centre by McGregor. Bruce headed in, and Dunning was very smart to prevent Bruce scoring.
The Villa attacked, but were quickly beaten balm and when Skea got forward and beat Hendry, Hodgetts was ruled off side.
Devey made a grand shot, and Toone had to first out, and at the other end Daft made a bad shot.
Dunning effected another fine save. Hendry held Athersmith when in front of the Notts goal, but nothing resulted from the free kick. Burke charged Stokes in the back when was trying to head the ball. Daft sent in and Bruce easily beat Dunning twenty minutes from the start.
The Villa attacked, but Notts forced them back, and Toone then had to stop a fine shot by Hodgetts from a pass by Athersmith, and later Calderhead shot close.
Athersmith then caused Toone to run out and handle. The Villa were now having the best of matters, Notts only occasionally breaking away and at last Athersmith scored with a fine low shot from a pass. by Hodgetts.
Half-time score Aston Villa 1, Notts 1.
Notts recommenced the second half without Oswald, but he soon reappeared. There was some exciting play in the Villa goal, during which Dunning stopped one good shot. Then Athersmith put over the bar when he had a nice chance. Toone had, however, to be very smart to save two shots by him which followed. Brown had to kick over his own goal to stop Notts getting in.
The Villa again went, to the front and from a corner Hodgetts passed to J. Devey, who scored with a pretty shot.
The Villa goal had immediately a narrow escape, Bruce just, missing with a fast shot. The Villa however had again the best of matters, H. Devey almost beating Toone with a high shot. The latter saved splendidly from Afhersrmith, who afterwards put the ball through but he was offside.
Athersmith beat Toone and in the next minute, with a fine overhead kick, Skea scored again.
Result: Villa 4, Notts 1
