George Campbell
Player #73 for Aston Villa, George Campbell played as a midfielder for the club. George represented Villa between 1890-91 and 1892-93.
George was born in Largs, Scotland in February 1871 and made his debut as a 19 year old on 25th October 1890.
Villa had signed George from Renton FC and he went on to represent the club on 52 occasions.
George was brought to the club alongside fellow Rentonian James Brown and they had remarkably similar Villa careers, debuting in the same game, scoring their first goals in the same game, making 50+ appearances and both leaving at the tail end of the 1892-93 season.
George proved a regular starter for Villa as the helped the club to one Top 10 and two Top 5 finishes as well as appearing once in the run to the 1891-92 FA Cup final.
Such was his commitment to the Villa cause that George played in goal in the 26th March 1892 fixture against Sunderland at Newcastle Road where a crowd of 18,000 saw Villa and their novice keeper lose 2-1.
George’s final game came as a 22 year old on 25th March 1893, after which George moved back to his native Scotland to play for Dundee.
George played under the George Ramsay led Management Committee.
George passed away in Kirkcaldy on 4th April 1898 aged just 27.
