What they Said
"The Villa had the best of a grand game."
THE FOOTBALL LEAGUE.
ASTON VILLA V. BURNLEY
Aston Villa opened the League season on the Burnley Ground, the occasion being the September holiday, and 10,000 spectators were present.
At the start, Dunning had quite an anxious time of it saving capital shots from Buchanan, Crabtree, and H.
Hillman, at the other end, had just as anxious a time. Hodgetts being conspicuous.
The play in the first half was brilliant, but by the interval neither side had scored.
In the second half the Burnley side fell off a lot, and Villa played up splendidly.
Campbell shot past Hillman after the custodian had saved a stinger from Athersmith, and Fleming scored from a centre by Athersmith, Villa winning by two goals to nothing.

MATCHES PLAYED YESTERDAY.
THE LEAGUE.
BURNLEY V. ASTON VILLA.
At Burnley, before 8,000 spectators. Burnley Kicked off at 5.20, and a magnificent game was witnessed. Both goals were attacked, each custodian repeatedly fisting out. Hillman cleared a grand shot from Hodgetts, and two miraculous saves were made by Dunning. Both sides played brilliantly, but Burnley had slightly the best of matters. Half time arrived without either side having scored. Seventeen minutes after resuming Campbell scored for the Villa with a fast, low shot after Hillman had saved. After half an hour's play Fleming scored from a grand centre by Athersmith. The Villa had the best of a grand game. Final Score :. Aston Villa 2 Burnley 0
