Player #46 for Aston Villa, Harry Percival Devey played as a defender for the club. Harry represented Villa between 1887-88 and 1892-93.
Harry was born in Newtown just two miles from Villa’s current ground in 10th March 1860 and made his debut as a 27 year old on 15th October 1887.
Villa had signed Harry from Excelsior FC and he went on to represent the club 84 times and scoring once over his six seasons at the club.
Harry came from a family dynasty of professional footballers, Jack, Harry and Bob Devey all turning out for Villa. Abel, was a cricketer with Staffordshire whilst Ted and Will represented Small Heath.
Harry, a keen, hard-tackler, also had the ability, then rare for a defender at bringing the ball forward possessing a mix of two latter day Villa legends Shaun Teale and Paul McGrath.
Harry’s final game for Villa came on 14th January 1893 aged 32 after which he retired from football.
Harry had played his entire Villa career under the George Ramsay led Management Committee.
Harry passed away on 25th April 1940 in Birmingham aged 80.
