Gershom Cox

Player #45 for Aston Villa, Gershom Cox played as a defender for the club. Gershom represented Villa between 1887-88 and 1892-93.

Gershom was born in Birmingham just three miles from Villa’s current ground in March 1863 and made his debut as a 24 year old on 15th October 1887.

Villa had signed Gershom from Walsall Town and he went on to represent the club 102 times over his six seasons at the club.

For many years Gershom was believed to have been the first player to score in the newly formed Football League in the opening fixture of the inaugural 1888-89 season (by virtue of an own goal in favour of opponents Wolves).

Gershom did indeed score earlier than any other player in Villa’s opening fixture by hitting the back of his own net in the 31st minute of the match against Wolverhampton Wanderers. However it was a later kick-off than the other fixtures (something identified 125 years later in 2013) so sadly Gershom didn’t actually score the first ever Football League goal.

Gershom did however achieve a first, he holds the honour of scoring the first ever own goal in Football League history.

Gershom’s final game for Villa came on 18th March 1893 after which he joined Willenhall Pickwick.

Gershom had played his entire Villa career under the George Ramsay led Management Committee.

Gershom passed away in September 1940 in Birmingham aged 77.
