James Brown

Player #74 for Aston Villa, James Richard Brown, known as James Brown played as a midfielder for the club.

James represented Villa between 1890-91 and 1892-93.

James was born in Renton, Scotland in June 1868 and made his debut as a 22 year old on 25th October 1890.

Villa had signed James from Renton FC and he went on to represent the club on 55 occasions scoring 4 goals.

James was brought to the club alongside fellow Rentonian George Campbell and they had remarkably similar Villa careers, debuting in the same game, scoring their first goals in the same game, making 50+ appearances and both leaving at the tail end of the 1892-93 season.

James proved a regular starter for Villa as the helped the club to one Top 10 and two Top 5 finishes as well as appearing once in the run to the 1891-92 FA Cup final.

James’ final game came as a 24 year old on 21st January 1893, after which James moved on to Leicester Fosse.

James played under the George Ramsay led Management Committee.

James passed away in Leicester in 1924 aged just 55.
