"The second half was not worthy of description."
*Birmingham Daily Post*
Monday, 19 January 1891
ASTON VILLA v. LONDON CASUALS.
The above teams met at Perry Barr.
Owing to the frost, the ground was in a shocking condition, and the Casuals on seeing it lodged a protest with the referee.
Another change was made in the constitution of the Villa forwards, McKnight being placed on the right wing. The change worked admirably, and the Villa, especially during the second half, completely overplayed the Casuals, who seemed to experience greater difficulty in standing than did their opponents.
The visitors started the ball uphill, but were immediately robbed of it by the Villa, who at once made a strong attack on goal.
Several shots were sent in, but Seton saved well and the visitors' forwards relieved, Topham sending in a fine shot which Warner saved with credit.
The goalkeeper at the other end was soon busy again, and at length Brown screwed across goal, and L. Campbell scored with a capital shot.
The game continued to be entirely in favour of the home team up to the interval, before which McKnight had scored a second goal for the Villa by a beautiful piece of play, which gained him the hearty applause of all who witnessed it.
The second half was not worthy of description. With the exception of a run by Topham, who scored, the Casuals gave a miserable exhibition, and were completely and decisively beaten by the home team.
L. Campbell, who dribbled and centred splendidly, scored four goals; Hodgetts was responsible for three, Brown for two, whilst McKnight and Graham each scored once-so that the Villa won by 13 goals to 1.
