Frank Coulton
Player #41 for Aston Villa, Frank Coulton played as a defender for the club. Frank represented Villa between 1886-87 and 1891-92.
Frank was born in Walsall just ten miles from Villa’s current ground in February 1868 and made his debut as a 18 year old on 30th October 1886.
Villa had signed Frank from Walsall Swifts and he went on to represent the club 54 times across his eight seasons at the club.
Frank played all of the 10 games in Villa’s victorious 1886-87 FA Cup campaign, including the final at the Kennington Oval that hosted the 2-0 win over West Bromwich Albion.
Frank also made 2 appearances in the run to the 1891-92 FA Cup Final.
Frank was often described as a ‘stylish’ full-back and indeed proved to be a key member of Villa’s early years of the football league.
Frank made 31 League appearances in his first 2 league seasons but only 4 across the next 4 season. His best league season to which he made a material contribution was a runners place in 1888-89 the season in which he made his most appearances - 19.
Frank’s final game came on 5th March 1892 at the age of 24 when he was forced into retirement by a knee injury.
Although retiring early he remained a familiar face to Villa fans after becoming a licensee of various Birmingham pubs, including The Fluter’s Arms in Deritend, The Red House on Broad Street, and the White Horse on Constitution Hill.
Frank had played his entire Villa career under the George Ramsay led Management Committee.
Frank passed away on 11th March 1929 in Sparkhill, Birmingham aged 61.
