DARWEN v. ASTON VILLA

Played at Darwen before several thousand spectators. Darwen were without McOwen, Nightingale, and T. Marsden, the Villa having Warner, Dickson, G. Campbell, and Cowan absent.

The home team started and made a good attack, Evans twice frustrating the left wing pair, and Hinchley saving a warm shot.

The home team almost scored from a free-kick, and took a couple of fruitless corners. The Villa made a grand run, and Siddons conceded a corner, and from a nice pass by Devey, Campbell scored.

Again the Villa pressed and Entwistle had to save. and afterwards Devey shot over when under the bar.

Evans broke up the home forwards, and all the Villa got away in line, Owen nicely relieving. Entwistle made a grand shot, which Hinchley saved.

A scrimmage took place near the Darwen goal after a mis-kick by Siddons, but Leach relieved.

Hare scored twice for the Villa, and Campbell made a fourth.

At half-time the score was Villa 4, Darwen 0.

On resuming, Darwen first attacked, and both Carty and Alexander shot wide. After some pressure W Marsden headed through in ten minutes.

Devey obtained the ball, and scored a grand goal.

After a fine run the Villa pressed, and Entiwistle shot through the Villa goal, but the point was disallowed for offside.

Then the Villa had a capital chance, but Hare shot over.

Both ends were visited, the Villa shooting very badly.

Several times a warm bully occurred in the mouth of the Villa goal, but the defence was sound, and Athersmith obtaining the ball raced to the opposite end, but shot over.

Entwistle shot against the Villa cross-bar, Hinchley conceding a fruitless corner.
