What they Said
"It has been a remarkably fine fight, and Aston Villa are to be congratulated on their success."
WOLVERHAMPTON WANDERERS v. ASTON VILLA.
This important League match, upon which practically the chances of Villa gaining the championship depended, was played at Molineux Grounds, before a holiday crowd of 15,000 spectators. Neither team was fully representative. After 25 minutes Wheldon scored with a cross shot. The heavy wind favoured Villa, but the home forwards gave the Villa backs plenty of work.
Half-time: Aston Villa, 1; Wolverhampton Wanderers, 0.
In the second half the game was evenly contested. Although carried on at a hard and fast pace, nothing brilliant, on either side was shown, except it was the fine kicking of the two sets of backs.

ASSOCIATION FOOTBALL.
THE LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP.
Aston Villa Retain the Title.
With yesterday's match at Burnley, in which Burnley beat Sheffield United, the question of the championship was settled.
Sheffield United were beaten, and the Championship - as last year - belongs to Aston Villa.
It has been a splendid fight for the chief honours in the competition right to the last moment ; but Sheffield yesterday would not only have had to win, but would have had to secure a remarkable goal average to have ousted Aston Villa from their place at the head of the League.
It has been a remarkably fine fight, and Aston Villa are to be congratulated on their success. Sheffield United did much better than last year, but their large proportion of drawn games ruined their chances of securing a prize that ranks only second in importance to the English Cup.
