Albert Wilkes

Player #132 for Aston Villa, Albert Wilkes played as a wing half for the club.

Albert represented Villa between 1898-99 and 1906-07.

Albert was born in West Bromwich, less than 7 miles from Villa Park, on 6 September 1875 and made his debut for the club as a 23 year old on the 3rd September 1898.

Villa had signed Albert from Walsall and he went on to appear 158 times, scoring 7 goals over his 9 seasons with the club.

During his time with the Villa, Albert won 2 League titles in 1898-99 & 1899-00 as well as the 1904-05 FA Cup and the 1900-01 Charity Shield.

The Villa News and Record of 1st September 1906 paid tribute to Albert:

“A player of parts and a worthy follower of past Villa heroes. Scrupulously fair and honest in tackling, a willing worker, and an adept at finding openings for goal in big games. No place in the half-back line comes amiss to him. A quite, unostentatious player of the untiring order, he has done his share in raising the tone of football both on and off the field. ‘Straight as a die’, he is a general and deserved favourite.”

Albert’s final appearance for Villa came on 20th April 1907 following which he moved on to Fulham in June 1907.

Albert played under the George Ramsey led Management Committee.

Albert passed away in Bromsgrove on 9th December 1938 aged 61.
