"Then when many were fancying the result a draw Jack Devey got in one of his patent screwing shots and beat Hillman, and the Villa won a good and even game two goals to one."
*The Sporting Life*
Monday, 2 April 1900
BURNLEY V. ASTON VILLA.
The visit of the League Champions to Turf Moor on Saturday, where this game was played, created a lot of interest, and there would be 10,000 people present.
The ground was in capital order, and the play through the game was of high class.
The home team for a while at first were the better lot, but they could not score until George, in saving a hot shot from Chadwick, was brought to his knees. Before he could clear, the ball was landed into the net by Davies.
The home lot went at it merrily after this, but time after time were pushed back, and at the second attempt Wheldon beat Hillman and the scores were equal.
Tho game progressed merrily, and just on half time the Villa had a foul given them, but Wheldon put the ball high over the bar.
Half-time: Burnley, one; Villa, one.
In the second half the game opened finely, both sides attacking in turn, but failing to gain any material advantage for a long time.
Then when many were fancying the result a draw Jack Devey got in one of his patent screwing shots and beat Hillman, and the Villa won a good and even game two goals to one.
