Player #119 for Aston Villa, Albert James Evans, played as a full back for the club.
Albert represented Villa between 1896-97 and 1905-06.
Albert was born in Barnard Castle on 18th March 1874 and made his debut as a 22 year old on 7th November 1896.
Villa had signed Albert from Barnard Castle and he went on to represent the club 205 times over his 9 seasons at the club.
In his first season Albert helped Villa secure the league and cup double.
Overall, during his time with the Villa Albert won 7 major trophies: 3 League Championships in 1896-97, 1898-99 and 1899-00 as well as 2 FA Cups in 1896-97 and 1904-05 and 2 Charity Shields.
Albert played in 15 of 30 of Villa’s games in the 1896-97 Championship winning season and was an ever present in the victorious 1896-97 FA Cup campaign including the final, held at Crystal Palace in front of 65,891 people, as Villa recovered from a 2-1 deficit to beat Everton, 3-2.
By a twist of fate, as rival teams for the league title were involved in league matches on the afternoon of the 1896-97 FA Cup Final, results meant that Villa’s lead at the top of the table became unassailable.
Therefore, Villa became the only club to have won the League and FA Cup on the same day.
Albert made 29 appearances in the 1898-99 Championship winning season and 26 in the following year’s title.
Albert’s final game for Villa came on the 20th January 1906 aged 31 after which he moved to West Bromwich Albion.
Albert had played his entire Villa career under the George Ramsay led Management Committee.
Albert passed away in Warwick on the 22nd March 1966 aged 92.
