"For a long time the game was of a very scrappy nature, but just before the finish the Villa pressed, Garraty scoring."
*The Sporting Life*
Monday, 9 April 1900
The closing League match of the present season at Aston Lower Grounds, Birmingham, drew out an attendance of 18,000 spectators, the gate receipts amounting £346.
The opening was of a sensational character, for at once Smith raised the attack, and Orrell, to the evident chagrin of the strangers, kicked the ball through his own goal.
The Prestonians played hard, and George had to exert himself to keep his charge secure. Bowman cleared, and after a brilliant tun Templeton scored a second goal for the Villa.
The Aston left wing man, Smith, shortly afterwards had to retire, his leg giving way.
North End now redoubled their efforts, and Henderson beat George.
At half-time the Villa led two goals one.
Resuming Smith was still an absentee, the visitors pressing hard straight away. Evans cleared, but back came the Prestonians and the home goal was subjected to a prolonged siege.
At length Templeton cleared, and M' Bride had some hot shots to deal with, Orrell and Dunn clearing.
For a long time the game was of a very scrappy nature, but just before the finish the Villa pressed, Garraty scoring.
Result Aston Villa, three goals; Preston North End, one.
