"The Villa goal afterwards was often in danger, but the game ended in favour of the Villa by 4 goals to 2."
*The Yorkshire Post and Leeds Intelligencer*
Monday, 1 January 1900
ASTON VILLA V. SUNDERLAND.
In view of the attractiveness of this fixture, it was not surprising to find a big crowd at the Villa ground. Early on the visitors' goal had narrow escapes. Garraty at length scored, and the same player put on another point before half-time. Within five minutes of the restart Farquhar scored for the visitors, and soon after Garratty added one one for the Villa. The game then for some time was in favour of the Villa, and Johnson scored from a corner. Afterwards Sunderland showed improvement, and Leslie scored by a long shot. The Villa goal afterwards was often in danger, but the game ended in favour of the Villa by 4 goals to 2.
