"Garraty then obtained an eighth point and Devey beat Williams for the ninth time, the game ending - Aston Villa, nine goals; Glossop, nothing."
ASTON VILLA V. GLOSSOP.
COMPLETE ROUT OF GLOSSOP.
The visit of the youngest members of the Senior League last evening to Aston Lower Ground, Birmingham created a vast amount of interest in Midland football circles. The start was fixed for 5.30, but long before this the crowd began to assemble. and when the teams made their appearance there were 15,000 spectators present.
In their black and slate coloured jerseys, and red stocking, the strangers looked on the small side compared with their more muscular rivals.
Both elevens were at full strength. The weather was excessively hot, but there was a good breeze blowing, and winning the toss, Glossop set the Villa to face this at the outset, the strangers having the sun in their faces.
Smith received received the ball from Crabtree, but was pulled up by Colville. Athersmith broke through, and swinging into goal in the most approved style, Wheldon headed the ball past Williams, the Villa’s first goal being warmly applauded.
Now fairly on the go, the champions for a while completely hemmed Glossop in, the siege being terminated by Devey shooting over the bar.
With a praiseworthy dash the strangers broke away, and twice George cleared long, raking shots from Lumsden in good style.
Within ten minutes from the start Garraty scored goal number two.
After a grand run Smith banged through a third goal, Garraty following within the next minute, amid a scene of great excitement, the last three goals having been scored in leas than five minutes.
A sharp scrimmage followed, and this was wound up Wheldon heading the fifth goal for the home team.
Despite the extreme heat, the game proceeded on exceptionally fast lines, Gallacher being cheered for a fine single-handed effort, which Evans nipped in the bud.
With one of his lightning-like dashes Athersmith swooped down the right, and after outwitting Killeon and M’Ewan, the international banged through the sixth point, amid cheers.
Glossop woke up remarkably after this, and in rapid succession they forced three corners, but score they could not. Just on the interval, Glossop had hard lines in not scoring following a corner, and at half-time the score stood Aston Villa, six goals; Glossop nothing.
With the wind, the Villa were expected to shape remarkably well, and in the first minute Wheldon sent in a regular teaser, which Williams kicked away.
Soon again the contest was being waged around the Glossop goal, and twice cleared, amid impartial rounds of cheering. A bout of passing between Athersmith and Devey was capped by Garraty registering a seventh goal.
The strangers never seem to lose heart, but were hopelessly outclassed, and even on one occasion when George rushed out and left his charge totally unprotected Glossop could not find the net.
Clifford worked untiringly in the visitors’ half back line, but his efforts went for nothing. The contest was more even during the next ten minutes, Glossop having a few chances, of which, however they failed to avail themselves.
Garraty then obtained an eighth point and Devey beat Williams for the ninth time, the game ending - Aston Villa, nine goals; Glossop, nothing.
