"Towards the close Glossop attacked strongly, but they could not improve their score, but on the other hand they kept the Villans at safe distance, and Williams had not much to do of dangerous character, and despite the visitors putting on superhuman effort, they failed to draw level, and Glossop, amidst loud cheering, won one goal to nil."

GLOSSOP v. ASTON VILLA.
GLOSSOP BEAT THE VILLA BY ONE GOAL TO LOVE.
Probably never in the history the Glossop club has there been more enthusiasm than was displayed on Saturday last, when these teams met on the North Derbyshire enclosure, to contest their return League game. The first of which, on the Villa ground, ended such a thrashing for Glossop that almost all hopes of victory had died away, but the lads have since then learned that they can give the beat of clubs a warmish ninety minutes, and with this foremost in their minds they tallied forth before 6,000 spectators, and in a great measure wiped out the ignominy of their first meeting beating the famous Villans by a goal to love, and engendering a feeling of endearment amongst their followers that will take lot to erase.
The game commenced with the Villa having won the toss, but it was early apparent that they had caught a Tartar, for almost from the first movement Glossop were the aggressors, and the Villa were for the nonce penned almost directly the game started, and worrying the Villa Donaldson got hold and scored for Glossop a very few minutes from the start a loud cheer heralded the fact.
Villa dashed away, and Wheldon received from Athersmith caused Williams to clear with haste. Davidson again showed up in fine style but was beaten back, and the Villa caused Williams to concede a corner, but Bowman sent over the horizontal.
Some splendid work by Glossop was hardly finished up by Lupton, and then Wheldon missed the aperture by inches.
A furore of excitement was caused, when Davidson again bounded away and shot into the net, but to the chagrin of Glossop the whistle blew for off-side.
Villa again made an attack, but Williams was all there, and Glossop crossed over leading by one goal to Villa’s nil.
In the next period Glossop had the wind assist them, but the Villa had equal play and the dashing runs and long kicking of Glossop fairly surprised the Villa, whose pretty passing was enchanting to a degree, but yet they could not score, whilst on several occasions George was tested to his uttermost, and Athersmith was foiled at all cost.
At this juncture Mann appeared to have a glorious chance, but shot past, and Villa again took the ball into the home territory, but Glossop’s custodian was impeded, and a free kick was awarded.
Towards the close Glossop attacked strongly, but they could not improve their score, but on the other hand they kept the Villans at safe distance, and Williams had not much to do of dangerous character, and despite the visitors putting on superhuman effort, they failed to draw level, and Glossop, amidst loud cheering, won one goal to nil.
