On This Day
A second successive "great and exciting game" couldn't separate Villa and Southern League side Millwall necessitating a second replay to settle the third round tie.
What they Said
"At the end of the regulation ninety minutes no goals had been scored and the referee ordered an extra half hour. During this period the rivals contested every inch of the ground, but neither team scored, and a great and exciting game ended: Aston Villa, nothing; Millwall, nothing."
THE ENGLISH CUP.
THIRD ROUND. REPLAYED TIE.
ASTON VILLA v. MILLWALL ATHLETIC.
A POINTLESS DRAW AFTER EXTRA TIME.
A vast amount of interest was taken in this Cup tie which was replayed yesterday afternoon at Aston Lower Grounds, Birmingham, before 12,000 spectators.
The ground was in fair condition, though decidedly soft.
The Villa played exactly the same eleven as did duty Saturday last, but Millwall, who reached Birmingham on Tuesday evening, were without J, H. Gettins, who could not get away from business, Robertson filling the vacancy.
Millwall opened the game, and at once pressed, Brearley shooting behind. At the other end Devey shot feebly into the hands of Cox when he had a good opening. Millwall played powerfully, and George had to throw away a rasper.
Athersmith racing to the other end, only to see his centre headed past by Wheldon.
The Villa now asserted their superiority, and some exciting play was witness around Cox, the Millwall keeper saving grandly.
Nicol took play to the other end, and in saving George was injured.
At the interval neither team had scored.
The Southern men attacked vigorously on the change of ends, but the defence prevailed, and Devey changed the scene of operations.
Again Millwall pressed, and the home backs had all their work cut out to drive back Dryburgh and Banks.
Coming again the homesters forced a corner, which was of no avail, and twice Cox saved in masterly style.
The excitement was intense as the game continued to be fought on fast and furious lines.
At the end of the regulation ninety minutes no goals had been scored and the referee ordered an extra half hour. During this period the rivals contested every inch of the ground, but neither team scored, and a great and exciting game ended: Aston Villa, nothing; Millwall, nothing.
