Villa now have three wins in their last five games under the management committee as Dai Astley and Eric Houghton hit a brace apiece.
The game however is notable for the thuggery of the Portsmouth team and the failure of referee Jewell to sanction the behaviour. Villa though have the last laugh as a brace of penalties, both for violent play offences, win the game after Portsmouth had cancelled out Villa's quick start.
