Player #336 for Aston Villa, Thomas Frederick Biddlestone, known as Fred Biddleston, and nicknamed The Councillor, played as a goalkeeper for the club.
Fred played for Villa between 1929-30 and 1938–39 making 160 appearances.
Fred was born in Pensnett, just 13 miles from Villa Park, on 26 November 1906 and made his debut appearance for Villa on the 5 February 1930 aged 23.
Villa had signed Fred from Walsall for a fee of £1,750 earlier in February 1930 and from March that season made the number one position his own for the remainder of the season.
Fred would go on to share goalkeeping duties with Ben Olney, Tommy Jackson and Harry Morton for his first 3 seasons before disappearing from the team for the following 3 seasons.
However, Fred would wrestle back the #1 spot and go on to be first choice Villa keeper for the next 3 seasons to 1938-39. In those 4 seasons until league football was suspended for WW2, Fred made 107 league appearances having made just 42 in the previous 6.
In his 160 appearances, Fred conceded 251 goals at a rate of 1.57 per game whilst he kept 34 clean sheets.
Fred was the 40th custodian of the Villa goal in League and Cup football.
Fred played his final game for Villa on 25 March 1939 aged 32 subsequent to which he moved on to Mansfield Town.
Fred had played under the Billy Smith led Management Committee and Villa’s first manager proper, Jimmy McMullan as well as Jimmy Hogan.
Fred passed away in Blackpool in January 1982 aged 76.
