Arthur Cunliffe

Player #353 for Aston Villa, Arthur Cunliffe, played as a winger for the club in the outside left position.

Arthur played for Villa between 1932-33 and 1935-36 making 75 appearances and scoring 13 goals.

Arthur was born in Blackrod, WIgan on 5 February 1909 and made his debut appearance for Villa on the 6 May 1933 aged 24.

Villa had signed Arthur from Blackburn Rovers alongside Ronnie Dix in May 1933, signing both for what was described as a substantial fee.

Both players made their debut in the final game of the 1932-33 season and Arthur scored to boot in the victory over Derby County.

The following season 1933-34 Arthur would go on to make 33 league appearances, scoring 5 goals as well as helping Villa reach the Cup Semi Final with 6 FA cup appearances.

Arthur played his final game for Villa in the 1935-36 relegation season on 9 November 1935 aged 26 before moving to Middlesbrough the following month.

Arthur had played under the Billy Smith led Management Committee, and Villa’s first manager proper, Jimmy McMullan.

Arthur passed away in Bournemouth on 28th August 1986 aged 77.
