Tommy was born in Huyton, Liverpool on 28 May 1909 and made his debut appearance for Villa on the 24 February 1934 aged 24. Tommy became the only Villa player making his debut in the 1933-34 season.
Villa had signed Tommy from Hull City earlier in February 1934 for a fee of £4,500 and he went on to make 12 appearances in his first season.
For 1933-34 Tommy continued as a regular making 31 appearances but in the seasons either side of the 1936-37 Second Division season he barely played. His final game came on 26 February 1938 aged 28 before he moved on to Burnley in April 1937.
