Tommy Gardner
Player #355 for Aston Villa, Thomas Gardner, known as Tommy Gardner, and nicknamed Ghandi, played as a midfielder for the club in the position then known as a wing half.
Tommy played for Villa between 1933-34 and 1937-38 making 76 appearances and scored once.
Tommy was born in Huyton, Liverpool on 28 May 1909 and made his debut appearance for Villa on the 24 February 1934 aged 24. Tommy became the only Villa player making his debut in the 1933-34 season.
Villa had signed Tommy from Hull City earlier in February 1934 for a fee of £4,500 and he went on to make 12 appearances in his first season.
For 1933-34 Tommy continued as a regular making 31 appearances but in the seasons either side of the 1936-37 Second Division season he barely played. His final game came on 26 February 1938 aged 28 before he moved on to Burnley in April 1937.
Tommy had played under the Billy Smith led Management Committee, Villa’s first manager proper, Jimmy McMullan and his successor Jimmy Hogan.
Tommy passed away in Chester in February 1970 aged 59.
