John Maund scores for the second successive game but Villa lose for the seventh time in eight division two games under Jimmy Hogan.
The defeat though is an unlucky one as Villa are in the ascendancy throughout with Luton's football described as "not a shred" better than third division play. It is a goal after just 17 seconds and a defensive error that puts paid to Villa's hopes of a second successive victory to open 1937-38.

On This Day
Three days after their dismantling of promotion rivals Manchester United Villa are beaten at Turf Moor as they lose for the first time in four League games.
The victory is more than a little flattering but still it is yet another game in hand wasted by Villa and though they remain top of the table another opportunity to steal a march is thrown away.
So tight is the table that previously mid table Burnley's win moves them to sixth in the table.
Up next is second placed, one point behind Sheffield United and a visit to the thuggish football city.
Villa make it twenty wins, six draws and nine defeats in thirty five division two games.

Villa lose to Swansea for the first time in their history after a 48 turnaround from their victory over Tottenham at Villa Park.
Swansea, struggling at the foot of the table, put in their strongest performance of the season at the most inopportune moment but Villa do not do enough and lose for the second time in four League games as they are beaten at Vetch Field.
Villa make it twenty one wins, seven draws and ten defeats in thirty eight division two games.
Villa fall off top spot as Sheffield United win again to open a 2 point lead however the Villa still have two games in hand over the Sheffielders. Coventry and Manchester United join Villa, level on points, in second place, with promotion in the balance.
Winger John Maund, 23, made the last of his 48 appearances for Villa during which time he scored eight goals before moving on to Nottingham Forest in July 1939.
