Jimmy McMullan had recorded five wins, five draws and three defeats in his thirteen division two matches in charge and his successor Jimmy Hogan had now delivered one win, three draws and two defeats in his six game spell. Meanwhile, right back Jim Robey, 23, made his third and final appearance for Villa before moving on to Aberdeen in February 1938, whilst forward Gordon Hodgson, 32, made the last of his 28 appearances during which time he scored eleven goals before moving on to Leeds United in March 1937.
