Player #340 for Aston Villa, Thomas Wood, known as Tommy Wood, and nicknamed Smokey and Splinter played as a midfielder for the club in the position then known as a wing half.
Tommy played for Villa between 1930-31 and 1936-37 making 71 appearances and scoring twice.
Tommy was born in Wednesbury, just 8 miles from Villa Park, in April 1908 and made his debut appearance for Villa on the 1 November 1930 aged 22.
Villa had signed Tommy from Birmingham League club Shrewsbury Town in February 1929 having previously played for Wednesbury United. Tommy appeared just once in his debut season.
As a back up to the regular first team, Tommy had a varied Villa career making 13 appearances in a season on two occasions and having 20 plus starts in a campaign in 1933-34 and 1935-36. These outings however were interspersed with seasons where Tommy made just a single appearance for the club.
Tommy’s most league appearances came in 1935-36 when he made 22 starts, however that achievement came in a season in which Villa were relegated for the first time in their history. In happier times Tommy made 6 appearances as a member of Villa’s 1934 FA Cup semi final team that lost to Manchester City at Leeds Road, Huddersfield.
Tommy would go on to make a single appearance for Villa in the second division on 31 October 1936 aged 28 before moving on to Newport County.
Tommy had played under the Billy Smith led Management Committee as well as Villa’s first manager proper Jimmy McMullan and Jimmy Hogan.
Tommy passed away in 1970 aged 62.
