Frank Broome

Player #360 for Aston Villa, Frank Broome, played as a centre forward for the club.

Frank played for Villa between 1934-35 and 1946-47 making 151 appearances and scoring 91 goals.

Frank was born in Berkhamsted on 11 June 1915 and made his debut appearance for Villa on the 6 April 1935 aged 19.

Villa had signed Frank from Berkhamsted Town in November 1934, having scored 6 goals in his trial match against Moor Green earlier in the year.

Frank made his Football League and Villa debut at Portsmouth in April 1935, however it was to be the following season before Frank established himself as a regular starter at the tail end of Villa’s first ever relegation season.

Frank flourished in the second division scoring 29 goals including hat tricks against Blackpool and Blackburn Rovers in 1936-37 and 26 goals the following season as his goals helped Villa win the Second Division Championship and promotion back to Division One

Frank also scored a hat trick in the FA Cup tie with Charlton Athletic in February 1938, and was part of Villa’s 1937-38 FA Cup Semi Final team that lost 2-1 to eventual winners Preston North End at Bramall Lane.

Like many players of the era, Frank’s career was interrupted by WW2 and although he returned to Villa after the War he played 6 and scored 6 in the 1945-46 FA Cup but after one more League appearance, aged 31, on 31 August 1946 he moved on to Derby County for a fee of £5,000 in September 1947.

Had the war not intervened there is little doubt that Frank would have had the opportunity and talent to rival the very heights of Villa goalscoring records.

After his Villa days Frank took his form with him - hitting 45 in 112 league games for Derby and then 35 in 105 for Notts County with Broome still active in 1955 with Sherborne in Ireland.

Frank had played under Villa’s first manager proper, Jimmy McMullan and his successors Jimmy Hogan and ex-Villa player Alex Massie.

Frank passed away in Exeter on 10th September 1994 aged 79.
