Villa lose successive games to end the season joint 14th but are classified sixteenth in the table six points clear of the relegation places. Tommy Cummings' reign delivered scant improvement in form bar a mid-season spell of eight wins in twelve games.
Tommy Cummings' Villa end the season with successive losses and make it fifteen wins, seven draws and twenty defeats this season as they finish 16th in the second division. Cummings had arrived as a replacement for the hapless Dick Taylor but eight losses in the first ten games didn’t suggest that Villa’s woeful form under Taylor was going to be reversed by the new manager. The following ten games took Villa to mid December and saw an upturn in form, winning five, but the thirteen losses suffered in the first twenty games of the season made it plain that promotion was not on the agenda this season and at best another campaign in the second tier beckoned. Results from December to February all but secured Villa’s second division status but a terrible run to the season end, winning twice in thirteen games and losing seven meant there was little optimism and few positives to take into the following season. Ultimately Tommy Cummings’ first season as Villa manager saw Villa’s lowest ever finish since league football began in 1888 following the previous season’s relegation.
