Villa win successive games for the first time under Tommy Cummings as they beat League leaders Blackpool with three spectacutar goals as Cummings’ three signings Greenhalgh, Godfrey and Mitchinson come good again. As a result Villa climb to joint 17th in the table but sit fourth from bottom on goal average three points clear of the relegation places.
Tommy Cummings' Villa win successive games for the first time since November 1966 and for the first time under his stewardship to make it four wins, a draw and eight defeats in thirteen League games so far this season.
Meanwhile, in a surprise turn of events, centre back John Sleeuwenhoek made his final appearance for Villa aged just 23 before moving on to Birmingham City in November 1967. Sleeuwenhoek played for Villa between 1960-61 and 1967-68 making 260 appearances, scoring once. A teenage prodigy for Villa, Sleeuwenhoek was never to be the same player again once he’d crossed the city,
What they Said
“There has been a 100 per cent improvement in the team since the start of the season.
“The players are giving me the effort I want.
“I’m particularly pleased that we pulled off this victory against Blackpool by playing attacking football.
“Obviously, there is still a lot of hard work to be done, but we are beginning to look like a real team and I think we have turned the corner.
“This boy Greenhalgh is only 20, and I’m certain he’s going to be a great centre forward.
“The inside forward trio are now looking pretty good with Mitchinson supplying the passes and Greenhalgh and Godfrey snapping up the chances.”
Tommy Cummings.
