Mike Tindall

Player #480 for Aston Villa, Michael Chadwick Tindall, known as Mike Tindall, played as a midfielder for the club in the wing half position.

Mike played for Villa between 1959-60 and 1967-68 making 136 appearances and scoring 9 goals.

Mike was born in Acocks Green, just 7 miles from Villa Park, on 5 April 1941 and made his debut appearance for Villa on Monday, 28 December 1959 aged just 18.

Villa may have had an up and down time on the pitch during the 1950s however one thing the club got very right was their youth policy of which Mike Tindall was a key product. Dubbed ‘Mercer’s Minors’ the group included Alan Deakin, Charlie Aitken, John Sleeuwenhoek, Harry Burrows, Mike Tindall and Alan Baker.

Villa had signed Mike from South Birmingham Boys in April 1956 and he signed professional forms with the club in April 1958.

Mike made two appearances as Villa took the Second Division Championship and won promotion back to Division One at the first attempt.

Mike however would not feature at all in the following season - being sent out on loan to New York Americans - and would only return to the first team in 1961-62 and thereon in became used more of a back up player than a regular starter until the 1965-66 and 1966-67 seasons when he made 26 league appearances in each.

Sadly the 1966-67 saw Villa relegated to the Second Division and the following season - Mike’s last - saw a disappointing failure to return to top level football.

Mike had however helped Villa to runners up in the League Cup final in 1962-63 and a semi final in 1964-65 but success for Villa was scarce through the 1960’s.

Mike played his final game for Villa on Saturday, 25 November 1967 at the age of 26 and after 8 eventful season Villa he moved on to Walsall on 1 June 1968.

Mike played under Villa managers Joe Mercer, Dick Taylor and Tommy Cummings.

Mike passed away on 11 August 2020 aged 79.
