Player #516 for Aston Villa, John Woodward, nicknamed Woodie played as a forward for the club. John played for Villa between 1966-67 and 1968-69 making 37 appearances and scoring 8 goals.
John was born in Tunstall, Stoke-on-Trent on 16 January 1947 and made his debut appearance for Villa on Saturday, 1 October 1966 aged 19.
Villa had signed John from Stoke City on 1 October 1966 for a fee of £30,000.
John had scored his first senior goal - for Stoke - on 27 March 1965, in a 2–1 victory over Villa at the Victoria Ground however he wasn’t a regular starter for the club. Villa however saw enough potential to spend big on John as a replacement for Tony Hateley, who had been sold to Chelsea.
During his time with Villa, John suffered relegation in 1966–67, and could only finish 16th and 18th in the Second Division in 1967–68 and 1968–69.
In total John scored seven goals in 26 league games during a turbulent time at Villa Park, in which Dick Taylor, Tommy Cummings, and Tommy Docherty all had brief spells as manager.
John played his final game for Villa on Saturday, 21 December 1968 aged just 21 and he moved on to Walsall at the end of that season on 1 May 1969.
