On This Day
Villa win and Fulham lose as Tommy Dochertyโs new charges climb to joint 18th in the table but remain in the relegation places on goal average.
Docherty proves โtactics Tommyโ to predecessor Cummingsโ โtimid Tommyโ and unconditionally grants a transfer request for want away โkeeper Withers whilst reinstating goalscorer Barrie Hole.
Villaโs victory was all the more impressive as Norwich arrived at Villa Park with the best away record in the division.
Tommy Docherty wins his first game in charge as Villa now have four wins in the last twenty nine games and make it four wins, eight draws and twelve defeats in twenty four division two games so far this season.
Earlier in the day however, deposed Villa #1 Colin Withersโ transfer request was granted by Docherty whilst Barrie Hole, who had not featured since a bust up with caretaker manager Arthur Cox in November and subsequent suspension, returned to the team for Dochertyโs debut.
Meanwhile, forward John Woodward made his final Villa appearance as a substitute before moving on to Walsall in May 1969. Woodward played for Villa between 1966-67 and 1968-69 making 29 appearances and scoring 8 goals.
What they Said
โI am not really being a turncoat.
โI was perfectly happy and contented at Birmingham City and keen to do anything I could for the club - and I hope what I have done there has been helpful.
โI can say, in fact, I was devoted to [Birmingham City].
โBut when Villa were playing and we [Birmingham City] were not. I was always a guest at Villa Park.
โAs a matter of fact, when I started my own business. I bought a season ticket for both grounds. though I could not really afford the money."
โI have always liked both teams - but while I was with Birmingham I was what you could call 101 per cent loyal to Birmingham and now this position is reversed I am similarly 101 per cent for Aston Villa.
โAt present, I intend to go every morning to Villa Park. Say at about 9.30. And stay there until I have a late lunch. Today, for example, I left there at 2 p.m."
Herbert Douglas Ellis.
