Villa and Willie Anderson’s renaissance grows under Tommy Docherty as the new boss records a third successive victory, this time over mid table Carlisle and Villa’s first away win of the season, and in so doing climb to four points clear of the relegation places although they have played two games more than second from bottom Oxford. Bob Stokoe though is far from impressed.
Tommy Docherty makes it three wins in three since taking over as Villa boss who now have six wins in the last thirty one games and make it six wins, eight draws and twelve defeats in twenty six division two games so far this season.
Villa win three consecutive games for the first time this season and Docherty has now won as many games in the last three fixtures as Tommy Cummings and Arthur Cox had managed in twenty four games.
Meanwhile, midfielder Tommy Mitchinson made his final appearance for Villa aged 25 before moving on to Torquay United in May 1969. Mitchinson played for Villa in 1967-68 and 1968-69 making 52 appearances and scoring 9 goals.
What they Said
“Villa’s time wasting tactics in the last quarter of an hour were diabolical.
“If I had to depend on football like that to get results, I'd rather be sweeping streets.
"They used all the spoiling tactics you can think of. In the first few minutes, I heard someone shout from the trainer's bench: 'Kick for the corner flag.'
"My players were upset by the persistent fouling and the referee's failure to stamp it out.
"The people I feel sorry for are the Aston Villa players. They can't enjoy carrying out tactics like that.
"It was hardly the sort of entertainment either, we wanted to give a crowd of 12,500 - Our biggest of the season."
Bob Stokoe.
"We are all professionals and professionals don't like losing.
"But I really don't want to get involved in any arguments.
“Quite frankly, I thought we were the better side after the first 10 minutes and deserved to win."
Tommy Docherty.
