Villa end Ron Atkinson's first season in charge in 7th place in the first division as the Midlands' only other top flight team escape relegation on the final day despite a comprehensive beating at Villa's hands.

Atkinson's first season in charge had seen them finish just behind Liverpool - the team they had challenged for the title two years earlier - and the campaign was much improved over the troubles experienced in the later stages of 1990-91. 

Atkinson’s raft of new players had performed admirably and but for a spell of League games at the start of 1992 would have finished even further up the table. 

1991-92 would, however, be the end of an era as the old divisional structure of football, which had been in place for over 100 years, was to be replaced from 1992-93 by the controversial Premier League. 

As with the original football League, Villa would be founder members of the Premier League, but it didn’t come without concerns for the future health of the game at all levels.

Cyrille Regis contributes his 15th goal involvement in a Villa shirt as he scores his third goal in six games to make it 46 Appearances, W19 D10 L17, 11 Goals and 4 Assists at a goal involvement rate of one for every 3.07 games he has played so far in his Villa career.
