ON THIS DAY
Ron Atkinson's Villa win their final game of the season as they finish a healthy seventh in the Division One table. Atkinson's first season in charge had seen them finish just behind Liverpool - the team they had challenged for the title just two years earlier - and the campaign was much improved over the troubles experienced in 1990-91.
A raft of new players had performed admirably and but for a spell of League games at the start of 1992 would have finished even further up the table.
1991-92 would, however, be the end of an era as the old divisional structure of football, which had been in place for over 100 years, was to be replaced from 1992-93 by the controversial Premier League.
As with the original football League, Villa would be founder members of the Premier League, but if didn’t come without concerns for the future health of the game at all levels,
Forward Ian Olney made his final appearance for Villa aged 22 before moving on to Oldham Athletic for a fee of £700,000 later this month.

"Coventry have never won at Villa Park - and you wonder if they ever will - in 18 League games during their 25 years in the First Division."
*Sunday Mirror*
Sunday, 3 May 1992
VILLA did their best to put Midland rivals Coventry into Division Two.
Sky Blue old boy Cyrille Regis opened the scoring after only 20 seconds with a spectacular, header.
And Dwight Yorke hit a matching header later in the first half to underline Villa's superiority.
But lucky Coventry escaped the drop because of Luton's defeat at Notts County.
Coventry have never won at Villa Park - and you wonder if they ever will - in 18 League games during their 25 years in the First Division.
They weren't worrying about that last night. They were soundly beaten in a match they needed to win - yet still stayed up.
