Villa score for the first time in seven games courtesy of Steve Staunton as they win only their second League game in thirteen in 1992 to and climb back to 9th in the first division table under Ron Atkinson.
Having been out of action from November to March, Dalian Atkinson’s goalless streak now extends to 15 appearances having hit his only goal so far for the club on debut to make it W6 D6 L4, 1 Goal and 6 Assists so far in his Villa career.
What they Said
“I paid big money for Dalian and we pay him good money.
“I want to see him start earning it.
“He has been unlucky with injuries this season, but when players are out for a long time, they tend to get soft.”
Ron Atkinson.
“There seems to be a virus going round the club.
“Cyrille had it last week and missed the match with Palace.
“I felt really weak and dizzy on the pitch [asking to come off after 10 minutes] and I didn’t get out of bed until 4.30 yesterday afternoon.
“I still feel under the weather but I want to play.
“I’ve been told that if it [being half a stone over weight] comes off too quickly I will be a lot worse.
“All I want now is to get the season over and start afresh next time.”
Dalian Atkinson.
ASTON VILLA were only 12 minutes away from setting a club record of six League games without a goal when Steve Staunton snatched a late winner against FA Cup semi-finalists Norwich.
The former Liverpool defender ended a barren run of 567 minutes in League football for Villa with a looping cross-shot from the left.
The ball dipped beyond goalkeeper Mark Walton and was already across the line when Cyrille Regis stooped to apply an unnecessary touch.
Villa had hammered away in the second half but for all the pressure, tested Walton only once - from a 25-yard free kick by German midfielder Matthias Breitkreutz.
