Villa concede a first half strike to Peter Ndlovu before maintaining an almost permanent assault on the Highfield Road goal but to no avail as they lose for the second time in three first division games.
Villa had now won just once in their last nine matches under Ron Atkinson.
Centre forward Gary Penrice, 27, makes his 20th and final appearance in a Villa shirt (14 Starts) before moving on to Queens Park Rangers for a fee of £625,000 in October. Penrice had moved to Villa from Watford 6 months earlier for a fee of £1,000,000 and left with a record of 1 Goal, 2 Assists, W6 D3 L11 across his brief Villa career.
What they Said
“Our second half showing was as good as we have played all season, but it’s no good starting at half time.
“The first hall was abysmal, we were spineless and not competitive.
“If we had played with the same drive and commitment that we showed after the break, we would have come away with something.”
Ron Atkinson.
COVENTRY ASTON VILLA ZIMBABWEAN international Peter Ndlovu struck a great goal to settle an intense local derby and keep patched-up Coventry among the first division's high-flyers.
The 18-year-old Bulawayoborn striker, whose native language is Matabele, must have seemed like a sorcerer to Villa's £1.5 million Irish left-hack Steve Staunton.
Staunton was tormented by his young adversary, who in the 40th minute picked up the ball on the edge of the penalty area, dummied past the former Liverpool player, side-stepped Kent Nielsen and then beat Nigel Spink with a rifling left-foot shot.
It was all Villa after that but Steve Ogrizovic made four fine saves from Gary Penrice,, Dwight Yorke, Paul McGrath and Nielsen. Little Micky Gym headed off the line from Penrice.
