Villa record their second win in 10 and biggest win of the season as Dalian Atkinson hits a brace of assists to climb to 14th in the First Division table under Ron Atkinson.
Meanwhile, goalscorer Paul Mortimer gives the Holte End a two fingered salute. Despite only recently arriving at the club, Mortimer would soon be ushered out the exit door by Atkinson having made 13 Appearances, 11 Starts, W4 D4 L5, 1 Goal and 1 Booking so far in his Villa career.
Dalian Atkinson has now contributed an assist on each of his first four appearances in a Villa shirt to make it 1 Goal and 5 Assists at a goal involvement rate of one for every 0.67 games he has played so far in his Villa career.
Kent Nielsen makes his 100th appearance in a Villa shirt (95 Starts) to make it W42 D25 L33, 5 Goals and 7 Assists so far in his Villa career.
Cyrille Regis scores his first goal in a Villa shirt since scoring on debut on the opening day of the season to make it 13 Appearances, W4 D4 L5, 2 Goals and 2 Assists at a goal involvement rate of one for every 3.25 games he has played so far in his Villa career.
Dwight Yorke contributes his 10th goal involvement in a Villa shirt on his 33rd appearance (18 Starts) to make it W9 D10 L14, 4 Goals, 6 Assists and 1 Booking at a goal involvement rate of one for every 3.30 he has played so far in his Villa career.
What they Said
“I’m probably not sharp enough to score goals myself, so I’ve got to set them up for others.”
Dalian Atkinson.
RECORD signing Dalian Atkinson turned his long delayed home debut into a triumph for Aston Villa and more misery for struggling Luton Town.
After playing in only three away games since his £1.6 million summer transfer from Real Sociedad, Atkinson took only four minutes to lay on the opening goal for Kevin Richardson.
Cyrille Regis added a second but the best was still to come from Atkinson.
His tremendous pace took him past three defenders before he supplied a centre for Dwight Yorke to head the third.
Luton even missed a penalty when Philip Gray smashed his kick against the bar after a handling offence.
It became all too easy for Villa, and 10 minutes from time substitute Paul Mortimer scored the fourth.
