MATCH QUOTES

"It's a dream come true to hit double figures for Villa in my first full season. "But a lot of the praise has to go to old man Cyrille he is a tremendous inspiration to us all and he is always helping us.” I should have scored a couple of minutes before I eventually found the net. “But Tim Flowers made a super save and I thought Southampton were always very tough opponents.” But after Cyrille had scored the first goal and then provided me with the through-pass for the second we deserved our victory.” Dwight Yorke “It wasn’t a vintage performance from us. “But the thing that pleases me most is that the team can make something out of nothing. “There were two smashing goals which would been three of the best in the country had Daley’s been a hit.” "If Ian Olney or Dalian Atkinson had been fit I might have been tempted to give Cyrille a rest. "But I'm glad I didn’t. Paul McGrath also did a magnificent job at the heart of our defence. "But it's easy for him and its far more difficult for centre-forwards like Regis in our current game. "We have to be satisfied to be going into the New Year in fifth place.” Ron Atkinson.

Fresh from a Boxing Day success against West Ham, Villa opened up a two-goal lead but were made to sweat after Shearer's close-range header from a 73rd minute corner. Earlier Villa easily overcame the problems of their heavily-sanded pitch against an error-prone defence. Cyrille Regis collected a poor header out and fired home the first goal after 15 minutes and Dwight Yorke profited from a similar mistake on the hour. The West Indian born winger charged down a clearance, took a return pass from Regis and ran through to score his tenth goal of the season.
