Europe could have been on another planet as Villa laboured to a result that has almost become their 1992 trademark in the meagre surroundings of Meadow Lane.

A biting wind which blew across the Trent served to only emphasis the chilling message that a return to the continent is a rapidly diminishing dream for Villa.

However, as Ron Atkinson had pointed out beforehand, there was no rule that Villa could not win their remaining 11 matches.

Sadly, for the fourth consecutive match there was rarely a hint that their endeavours would be rewarded by a goal.

Even when David Elleray awarded a 30th minute penalty for a push on Neil Cox, Steve Staunton hit a weak spot kick which the ‘keeper saved with ease.

Ironically, Villa’s bright opening had suggested they could score at will. We should of course have known better.
