What they Said
"We were fortunate to survive a penalty."
Ron Atkinson.
TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR, the FA Cup holders, left Villa Park yesterday convinced they should have been given the chance to win this third-round tie from the penalty spot in the 85th minute.
Villa had the better of the first half but too often their final ball or touch let them down.
Yorke was wide of the target with a header and a volley. Richardson had a 20-yard shot saved and Regis headed just past a post.
There seemed no doubt to anyone watching - not even the most fervent of Villa fans - that Dwight Yorke had taken the legs from under Paul Walsh. But, in the opinion of the person who mattered, referee Jim Borrett, there had been no infringement of the laws and the official waved play on.
The decision by Borrett, who was well placed only 10 yards from the incident, ensured the match finished goalless.
The teams will meet again at White Hart Lane on Wednesday week. If nothing else, cash-starved Spurs will be grateful of the extra revenue.
Ron Atkinson admitted: "We were fortunate to survive a penalty."
