"If that goal was routine, Villa's second was magnificent.
"Tony Daley cutting in after 66 minutes to unleash a curling 35-yard shot that left Welsh international goalkeeper Neville Southall helpless."
*Birmingham Evening Mail*
Monday, 21 October 1991
ASTON Villa threatened to overrun Everton at Goodison Park as they comprehensively killed off the Merseysiders' unbeaten home record.
Villa went ahead after 32 minutes, veteran striker Cyrilie Regis firing home from close range after Dwight Yorke headed down ex-Evertonian Kevin Richardson's right wing corner.
If that goal was routine, Villa's second was magnificent.
Tony Daley cutting in after 66 minutes to unleash a curling 35-yard shot that left Welsh international goalkeeper Neville Southall helpless.
Southall had just made a brilliant point blank save from Mark Blake's close range header. Everton's new £600,000 fullback Matthew Jackson blocking Dalian Atkinson's follow-up effort.
It was Jackson's second crucial clearance in an impressive 20th birthday Everton debut. but it was a game most of his teammates will want to forget.
The sides had been evenly matched for the first half hour , but once Villa got their noses in front they threatened to bury Everton, only Southall's defiance and some desperate defending keeping the score down.
