Villa concede a second half penalty to second tier Grimsby after Steve Sherwood makes a string of saves to see Villa out of the League Cup on away goals.
Centre back Shaun Teale’s first goal for the Villa can’t prevent an exit from the League Cup on away goals. Teale scores on his 14th appearance in a Villa shirt to make it W4 D5 L5, 1 Goal and 2 Bookings so far in his Villa career.
Steve Staunton contributes his 1st assist in a Villa shirt on his 13th appearance to make it W4 D5 L4, 2 Goals and 1 Assist so far in his Villa career.
Paul Mortimer makes his 13th and final appearance in a Villa shirt (12 Starts) just 4 days after scoring his first goal for the club and 4 days after giving the Holte End the bird. No onw is really sure why but his Villa career is over with a record of W4 D5 L5, 1 Goal and 1 Booking.

“If you get three decent appeals for a penalty, you are entitled to one of them.
“The last one was unbelievable.
“Dwight was about to pull the trigger when he was fouled.
“When you go out of a cup it’s normally down to lack of application, but that can’t be levelled at us this time.
“Our players walked harder than in any game so far this season - and that makes defeat all the harder to take.”
Ron Atkinson.
Defeat on the away goals rule will be particularly painful to Atkinson, who led Sheffield Wednesday to victory in the same competition at Wembley last April.
The manager could only look on helplessly as his side strove desperately to land a third round place, only to see Grimsby somehow wriggle off the hook.
He had warned beforehand that there was a lot of playing to be done if Villa were to capitalise on the goalless draw they achieved on Humberside two weeks ago.
The additional period, though, brought nothing more than further frustration, with Sherwood making outstanding saves from Cowans and Dwight Yorke, and Villa having three penalty appeals dismissed by referee John Lloyd.
One, a push on Dalian Atkinson, was debatable, but the other two within a minute of each other left Villa fans convinced there had been a miscarriage of justice. Paul Futcher clearly handled Atkinson's cross, while Yorke was unceremoniously bundled over by John McDermott as he prepared to convert Cowans' pass.
The man who really denied their passage, though, was Sherwood. In the last 10 minutes of normal time, he twice turned away goalbound shots from Yorke, and gratefully clutched an Atkinson header.
Villa's record signing should have done better with that one, but, by then, you had a feeling Sherwood wouldn't be beaten for a second time.
